In this episode of The Daily Time Drop, Clare Vale takes us through a series of events that highlight the unpredictable nature of history. We begin with the Erfurt latrine disaster of 1184 in medieval Germany, a cautionary tale of politics meeting unfortunate plumbing. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of around sixty noblemen, revealing the literal and metaphorical rot beneath a kingdom built on precarious infrastructure. Switching timelines, Clare shares the tale of skateboarding making its debut at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where young athletes like Japan’s Momiji Nishiya and Brazil’s Rayssa Leal took centre stage, showcasing talent and youthfulness in a traditionally rebellious sport. Finally, we revisit the triumph of Solar Impulse 2 in 2016, a solar-powered aircraft that completed a groundbreaking journey around the world, highlighting a hopeful future powered by renewable energy. These stories together remind us of the inevitable surprises history holds and the lessons they impart.
